Solo Australian adventurer walks the Great Wall of China to raise funds for the disadvantaged

Australian adventurer Mark Scholinz is setting off on an arduous six month solo trek from Jiayuguan to Shanhaiguan along the Great Wall of China, covering some 4,000 kilometres and in the process helping to raise funds for struggling communities in the developing world.

Mark will start his epic trek in March 2007, enduring climates ranging from icy -10°C wintery desert nights and humid 35°C monsoonal days as he follows the path of the Great Wall of China. His journey will take him through spectacular scenery ranging from fertile farmlands, unforgiving mountain ranges and harsh deserts as he follows the path of the ancient Ming Dynasty Wall.

About me

I’ve always had an adventurous spirit and have been fortunate enough to have travelled extensively throughout the world. During these travels I have become acutely aware of the inequities across the globe and have always been thankful for the privileges granted by my Australian upbringing.

I’ve decided to take this opportunity to ‘make a difference’ and with your support I’m confident we can narrow the gap between poverty and prosperity throughout the world. Although this is a monumental task, I’m a firm believer that individuals can make a difference and that it’s only as a result of individual action that a collective gain can be achieved.

I am also aware that there are people out there, who may be unable to embark on lengthy adventures of their own. For those of you that have an interest in exploration or have a curiosity in regards to what is involved, I hope that by following my journey you can share in my experiences.

Any donations for the Great Wall Trek, no matter how small, are appreciated. You can rest assured that Oxfam Australia’s track record of providing assistance to the disadvantaged will ensure that your donation is used effectively. Please note that 100% of all donations go directly to Oxfam and are not in any way used to fund the Great Wall Trek. For those who may be unable to make a financial donation, a donation in the form of good will goes a long way and a random act of kindness can be equally valuable in making the world a better place.
